3D Systems introduces certified Copper Nickel (CuNi30) on the DMP range of metal 3D printers. This copper alloy was developed for the US Navy and is ideal for high-strength, corrosion-resistant metal parts for:
- Shipbuilding and repair components
+++ Pipe fittings +++ Valves +++ Pumps +++ Flanges
- Marine
- Cryogenic suspension and support systems
+++ Brackets +++ Cooling tubes +++ Guides
- Off-shore oil and gas
+++ Pipe fittings +++ Valves +++ Pumps +++ Condensers
- Chemical and nuclear equipment
3D Systems has worked with the material manufacturers Praxair Surface Technologies, in partnership with Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS), to certify this material for use with our DMP Flex 350 and DMP Factory 350 printers.
Key Benefits of Copper Nickel
-
Excellent corrosion resistance to salt water
-
Anti-microbial and anti-algae properties
-
Stress-corrosion resistance
“We’re excited to announce the completion of a significant milestone in the development of a CuNi alloy with 3D Systems. We’re looking forward to continuing to expand our parameter development efforts with 3D Systems into other alloys of interest to our industry. These developments allow us to further expand the use of additive manufacturing into our platforms in ways that provide positive quality, schedule, and performance benefits to the customer.”—Dave Bolcar, Vice President of Engineering and Design | Newport News Shipbuilding
Why DMP and CuNi30?
CuNi30 is historically a very difficult material to cast involving costly cycles of rework and reinspection, and limited supply chain options. Exclusively with 3D Systems’ line of DMP printers, it is finally possible to additively manufacture CuNi. DMP offers several benefits compared to conventional casting such as low-volume pipe fittings and valves:
- Significant lead time reduction
(Parts available in days, not years including small-volume or repair parts) - Simplified supply chain management and reduced inventory cost
- Superior mechanical properties
(Significant improvement versus cast and wrought) - Superior part density
(Average relative density ~99.88%), less repair

3D Systems First to Market CuNi30 Alloy
3D Systems is pleased to announce CuNi30, a corrosion-resistant, copper-nickel alloy for use with its DMP Flex 350 metal 3D printer. This material resulted from the company’s collaboration with HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding division to develop materials and process parameters for laser powder bed fusion additive manufacturing. The companies’ deep domain expertise facilitated the development of CuNi30 and is allowing Newport News Shipbuilding to use additive manufacturing in place of its traditional casting technologies.
